If you build it they will come...

At first I wasn't really convinced at the content of the video. Who goes to arcades anymore? Our current days are populated with personal video game systems, where interaction is found through the virtual world and human contact is foreign and strange.

Also I didn't find what he was doing too special. I remember when my youth was spent dreaming up stupid inventions and trying to get people to sign onto it. No one did, and perhaps that how I turned out to be the cynical person I am today.

So this was a little personal. This was vindication, me living vicariously living through Caine. But enough with the selfish talk about me, just watch the video and you gotta give some kudos for the kid. He sat there day and night waiting for his first customer, continuing to do his thing. Waiting and waiting knowing that his day would come.

It makes me happy to live in this world. More that just the imaginative showcase of a boy who pursued a good idea the video highlights the redeeming qualities of a select group of people who were willing to help realize a young boy's dreams instead of crushing them.

the Miscellaneous Adventures of Andrew Grove

There are moments when you just get inspired, be it from a book or a visit to the art gallery, and all you want to do is set about creating or dreaming of things that can be. In my life, I am frequently awestruck by the majesty of nature. I appreciate the interplay between man and his surroundings, one constantly trying to get the better of the other. The man builds a house, nature breaks it down, man fells a tree, tree falls on man etc. but there are instances when man gets right with nature and they begin a friendship that is mutually respectful and beneficial.

At least this is what I'm reminded of with Andrew Grove's aptly titled Miscellaneous Adventures. An illustrator by trade, he spends some of his downtime creating some of the most marvelous of trinkets outside his farm in the UK.

1st Annual Love Competition (where it actually pays to win)

Usually I have stints where I do lots of blogging and when I don't do any. I felt this was worthwhile. It peaks my interest as a person who studies brains, but it speaks to me as a human being. The first Love Competition put on by Stanford to study the physiological responses of the brain when we think about love. Contestants are strapped to the MRI and told to spend their stint in there reminiscing about the loveliest moments in their lives.
